The 10 Golden
Moving Tips

Our experts share their golden tips for a well-organized move. Practical advice to help you save time, money, and stress during every step of the moving process.

A smooth move starts with a good plan

Whether you’re moving across the street or to another city, good preparation makes all the difference. Our movers are in the field every day and know exactly what often goes wrong, but especially what does work.

The 10 golden

moving tips

We share our knowledge and experiences so you can confidently embark on your next move.

1

Calculate your moving volume

It is important that you have insight into the moving volume of your move. This way, you can estimate how many strong moving boxes you need. But it is also helpful for a moving company if they know the number of cubic meters (m3) so they can estimate how many movers need to be deployed (and which moving truck they should use).

2

Arrange all administrative matters

Many administrative matters need to be arranged for your move. What should you think about?

  • Register with the new municipality.
  • Arrange address changes for your employer, the Tax Authorities, insurance companies, etc.
  • Notify the energy supplier that you are moving.
  • If you have pets, transfer the chip of your pet to the new address (very important!!).
3

Measuring your furniture

Your furniture needs to be measured. It needs to be checked what fits through the door or the stairwell. Perhaps furniture can also be disassembled, but if it is not necessary, that is just extra work. Movers can help you with carrying, a moving lift can be rented (including a mover) and then you do not have to carry so much. It is nice that you can count on that, because that way you can save your back a bit, and that is nice because so much work has to be done already. Therefore, give out of your hands what you can, because that gives you some more space and peace.

4

Good moving boxes

You need many moving boxes for your move, but are you going to buy or borrow them? Sometimes they can also be arranged for free. A moving company often offers the service and then you can use them, they are often extra strong! You can also save boxes that you get from packages or get boxes in the supermarket. They often have sturdy boxes and you can use them to move. It is better that you have extra boxes than that you have to fill everything with many and heavy things. Also note on the boxes what is in it, so it can be placed directly in the relevant room later and easier to unpack.

5

Sort out and throw away items

If you are going to move, that is often a good time to check what kind of things you have. What do you still need? What really needs to be moved? What can actually be thrown away? Maybe you still have boxes in a bedroom or attic that have not been opened for years. Usually these are things that you no longer need and these can often be thrown away, this really cleans up! It is nicer that you first sort everything out, then you do not have to move it. This will cost you a little more time now, but then you will move to a new home with things that you really need or want to keep. That is why it is so important that you start preparing for the move on time.

6

Packing the contents

Packing the moving boxes is a profession in itself. You can also do a lot yourself, so you have to ensure sturdy boxes, everything must be properly taped shut and you must of course distribute everything well over the boxes. We have a few tips on how to pack the contents well:

  • Filling and packing materials are important, you need more than enough of these. You must of course protect the contents of your boxes well. You can therefore use paper, kitchen paper and bubble wrap well (so save it on time).
  • Distributing weight well is also of great importance. You must distribute heavy things well anyway.
7

Goods that are fragile or flammable?

It is important that you pay close attention to items that are flammable or fragile. You can better protect them extra well, think of packing them in paper or in towels or possibly in clothing. It is then all safer, but also better protected and that is of course the intention!

8

Parking for packing and unpacking

If you are going to move, then it is no fun when you have to carry meters of boxes to the moving truck and back at the new home. That is why good parking is worth its weight in gold! You can also ask the neighbors if you can place the car there that day so that you have more space for the moving activities.

9

Check everything

Did you forget something? Walk through the house again, are all the moving boxes closed and packed? Do you have a basement or shed, also take a look here or at the storage space. If you have everything then you can go with peace of mind and start the move.

10

Not to do with a move?

Another last golden tip, and it is about what you should NOT do during a move: do not tape cabinet doors shut because this can damage the paint. In addition, here are some important tips:

  • First assemble furniture before unpacking boxes. This gives more overview and you can store things directly.
  • Give our movers space! They are experienced and work most efficiently this way.

Frequently asked questions about moving

When is the Best Time to Start Planning?

Ideally, you should start four to six weeks before the moving date. This gives you enough time to sort out things, arrange your moving permit and possibly enlist help.

Your moving volume is the total amount of items you want to move. You can easily calculate this with our online calculation tool. This way you know exactly how much space is needed in the truck and how many movers we need to deploy.

You can, but you don’t have to. In cities like Amsterdam or Haarlem, a permit is required if a moving lift or truck has to be on the street. We can arrange this for you, so you can be sure that everything is done according to the rules.

That depends on the size of your house, the distance and how much help you want. On average, a private move takes between 4 and 8 hours.

Use sturdy wrapping paper, towels or bubble wrap. Place heavy items at the bottom and fragile items on top. Label the boxes with ‘fragile’ and indicate this on moving day, so that our movers handle them with extra care.

Yes, you can! Magic Movers is also available on weekends, depending on the planning. Especially in busy periods (such as month-ends) we recommend booking in time.

No problem, we just keep moving. Our trucks and materials are well protected against rain, and we ensure that your belongings remain dry and safe.

Yes, sure! If you want, you can certainly help with light tasks such as handing over boxes or lifting small furniture. Please indicate this when requesting the quote, so we can take this into account in the planning.
